Year 8

  • In this unit we explore some alternative beliefs from around the world. This unit allows pupils to develop their critical thinking, debate and evaluation skills. By exploring these unusual and controversial beliefs pupils will evaluate evidence, think critically and develop their own beliefs.

    We will look at a range of topics from life after death and spiritualism to life on other planets and mythical creatures. Many of these beliefs are inspired by myths, fairy tales and folklore, some have evolved over time, and many have been passed down for hundreds of years. We will explore case studies evaluate the evidence and take part in some class debates.

    This unit is an opportunity to explore some non-religious beliefs that are still important to culture and society around the world.

  • Religion - A particular system of faith and worship.

    Atheist - Lacking belief in God or Gods.

    Paranormal - Lacking belief in God or Gods.

    Mediums - Psychics who have the ability to communicate with otherworldly beings.

    Spiritualists - A religious group that believe that the spirits of the dead can communicate with living people:

    Reincarnation - The cycle or birth, life, death and rebirth.

    Karma - The force generated by a person's actions.

    UFO - Unidentified flying object.

    Extra-terrestrial - A being from another planet.

    Myth - A traditional story or a widely held but false belief or idea.

    Urban legend - A modern story of obscure origin and with little or no supporting evidence.

    Conspiracy theory - A belief that some secret but influential organization is responsible for an event or phenomenon.

  • Pupils will receive homework each three weeks, this will be set on teams therefore it is important that pupils are supported with accessing and navigating teams. One piece of homework will take the form of a quiz, one piece will be based on an article or piece of reading.

    You can also support your child by discussing what they have been learning about and by discussing current affairs that link to religion. Encourage your child to come to school with any questions that they have and if they follow a religion, encourage your child to talk about it in lessons.
