Half Term 1

The Elements of Music & Rhythmic Notation

  • Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to secure their understanding of Rhythm and The Elements of Music.

  • Key Vocabulary:

    The Elements of Music: Pitch, Dynamics, Texture, Timbre, Tempo, Duration

    Rhythmic Notation: crotchet, quaver(s), minim, semibreve

    Pupils will be able to:

    Understand how the elements of music can be used to create musical contrasts and add musical expression.

    Apply the elements of music to a given musical stimulus

    Employ the elements of music in performance tasks

    Disciplinary Knowledge –

    Learn to read, perform, and compose with rhythms using musical notation.

    Learn to recognise how elements of music are used in musical expression.

  • Listen to a wide variety of musical genres (Spotify, YouTube etc. are great tools to support this) and encourage opportunities to see live music making in action where possible.

    Encourage your child to continue their musical studies beyond the classroom. Wakefield Music Services provide both individual and group lessons should your child wish to learn to play an instrument or develop their vocal skills.

Half Term 2

Mystery Melodies & The Notes in the Treble Clef

  • Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to secure their understanding of musical pitch and the instruments of the String Family.

  • Key Vocabulary

    The Elements of Music: Pitch, Dynamics, Texture, Timbre, Tempo, Duration

    Rhythmic Notation: crotchet, quaver(s), minim, semibreve

    Notes of the treble clef.

    Recognition of string instruments and their timbres: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp

    Pupils will be able to:

    Read and perform well-known melodies from a written score.

    Recognise the individual timbres of the instruments of the string family.

    Compose melodies using a limited range of notes

    Disciplinary Knowledge –

Half Term 3

Ukulele Ensemble & The Woodwind Family

  • Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in performance using ukuleles and other instruments and recognise the instrumental timbres of the Brass Family.

  • Key Vocabulary:

    Chords (including C, F & G)

    Recognition of woodwind instruments by timbre including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon.

    Pupils will be able to:

    Play a variety of well-known pieces on the ukulele using the chords C, F & G.

    Play an active role in class ensemble performances of well-known pieces

    Perform in small group and class ensembles

    Disciplinary Knowledge –

Beatz Composing Challenge (in Ternary Form) & The Brass Family

  • Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in composing using music software and the instruments of the Brass Family.

  • Key Vocabulary:

    Ternary Form, The Elements of Music - texture, timbre etc.

    Recognition of Brass instruments by timbre including trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba

    Pupils will be able to:

    Compose with layers and contrasting timbres within a given structure.

    Develop compositional ideas to show contrasts in the Elements of Music.

    Develop composing skills using Logic Music software.

I’m A Believer Ensemble Task & The Percussion Family

  • Pupils will participate in a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in performing using ukuleles and other instruments. Pupils will develop skills in recognising the timbres of instruments from the percussion family.

  • Key Vocabulary:

    Chord, strum, ensemble

    Recognition of percussion instruments by timbre including timpani, cymbals, maracas etc.

    Pupils will be able to:

    Play individual musical parts in a class ensemble performance

    Develop skills in ensemble performance using a variety of instruments.

‘Ossett’s Got Talent’ – vocal composition and The Music of other Cultures

  • Pupils will experience a variety of Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in songwriting and Listening activities relating to the music of other cultures

  • Key Vocabulary:

    Rhyming couplets

    The structure of songs: verse, chorus, introduction, coda etc.

    Instruments from other cultures e.g., sitar, tabla, djembe etc.

    Pupils will be able to:

    Contribute their ideas to develop lyrics for a group vocal composition.
